In the tradition of impressionist 'nocturnes' and the nearly monochromatic works of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, 'Port of Cadaques (Night)' (1918-19) might be subtitled 'Harmony in Blue.' Dali's view of the port at night is a chromatic fugue; deep ultramarine blues, teals, aquas, and blue-green tones coalesce in the rippled waters, with the silhouette of Mt. Pani in the background and a large sailboat in the middle ground. Working with color on the dark end of the value scale Dali establishes a high degree of luminosity.
